How Active Networks works?
As we described in What is an active networks also about the nodes and their architectures the nodes are programmed to perform custom operations on the messages that pass through the node. A user make a network active by embedding application-specific functionality, in the form of methods, within nodes or packets. Methods in active networks are similar to methods in object-oriented programming- they are executable procedures embedded within an object. User can preprogram selected network nodes, such as routers, with customized code before running an application. They can also program data packets, which then transport code to nodes along the way to their destination. In the latter case, the code configures the network to suit the needs of the application that generated the packets.
In both approaches, users can dynamically customize network resources via software and can quickly revamp them to fit application-specific needs. Programmed routes and switches could perform the type of computation on data that previously could occur only at network end points.
